Engineer + Researcher

Buildings. Decarbonisation. Data.

Leveraging building and data science for a sustainable, people-centric built environment in a changing climate.

I am a researcher and engineer with a background in building science and civil engineering. I specialise in the use of numerical modelling to plan and evaluate emissions and decarbonisation of buildings and other real assets at scale. I specialise in problems at the intersection of building science and statistics or data science, i.e., problems that require a thoughtful and holistic application of building physics, climate statistics, and data science.

I am the Director of Real Asset Analytics in the Innovation team at GRESB, led by the Chief Innovation Officer (Chris Pyke). In this role, I am responsible for the development and improvement of the rating system, including both existing and new products, through analytics and research.

I volunteer with ASHRAE and CIBSE. In ASHRAE, I am the Vice Chair of Technical Committee 4.2 (Climatic Information) and of SSPC 169 (Climatic Data for Building Design Standards). I have contributed to the 2021 and 2025 editions of the Handbook — Fundamentals. In CIBSE, I have contributed to TM68 (Monitoring Indoor Environmental Quality) and Guide M (Maintenance engineering and management 2023), and have been a member of the Facilities Management group.

I take on the occasional project and speaking engagement as an independent consultant and expert. Drop me a line if you have an interesting problem I can help with!

07-09 Dec 2024
I attended the inaugural Indian Management Research Conference at the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Ahmedabad. I spoke in a panel on the future outlook for ESG in real estate in India, and presented results from our research on the potential for carbon savings from retrofitting existing buildings.

22-26 Jun 2024
I was at the ASHRAE annual conference in Indianapolis, USA. Apart from committee meetings, I moderated and spoke in a panel on the use of projected (future) climate data for specific engineering problems.

09-10 Mar 2024
I will be hosting a workshop on the role of uncertainty in decision-making towards decarbonisation of buildings and infrastructure.

08 Mar 2024
I will be speaking at the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad, where I will be hosted by Prof. Prashant Das. We will discuss the role of ESG reporting in the development and operation of real assets.

13 Feb 2024
I attended the GRESB Regional Results event in London, hosted by CBRE.

31 Jan 2024
I presented a seminar at the ASHRAE Winter Conference 2024 in Chicago, IL, titled “Climate & Weather Data: Availability & Challenges”. Contact me if you’re interested in the content or similar seminars.

12 Jan 2024
I am joining GRESB on 15 January 2024 as Director of Real Asset Analytics. I will continue to be based in the UK but work with teams and customer worldwide.

Areas of Practice

Energy and Carbon in Buildings

Developing new methods and assessments for evaluating energy and carbon in buildings.

The impact of climate change on buildings

Uncertainty and sensitivity analyses of the performance of building designs and components.

What-if scenarios of future performance using projected data.

Large scale impact studies of climate change on the built environment.

Indoor Environmental Quality

Monitoring indoor environmental quality and indoor air quality through ubiquitous low-cost sensors.

Managing data and extracting insights for action.

“Le chaleur pénètre, comme la gravité, toutes les substances de l’univers, ses rayons occupent toutes les parties de l’espace.”

Joseph Fourier, Théorie analytique de la chaleur

[Heat penetrates, like gravity, all the substance of the universe, its rays occupy all the parts of space.]
